Coach types explained

Midi, standard, high-deck and double-deck coaches: what each is built for and how to choose.

“Coach” covers a wide range of vehicles. Choosing the right type for your routes saves money on fuel, drivers and maintenance, and keeps your passengers comfortable.

Midi coaches

Usually around 8–10 metres with roughly 25–35 seats. Midi coaches are easy to manoeuvre in city centres and on narrow roads. They suit small groups, airport transfers and hotel shuttles.

Standard touring coaches

Usually 12–13 metres with around 49–57 seats. This is the most versatile coach for tours, excursions, school trips and private hire. Large luggage bays and reclining seats make it comfortable over long distances. Both of our current coaches are 55-seat touring coaches.

High-deck coaches

A raised passenger floor gives better views and more luggage space underneath. High-deck coaches are popular for premium tours and long-distance travel.

Three-axle coaches

Around 13.5–15 metres. They carry more passengers and luggage and give a smoother ride, but cost more to buy, tax and run.

Double-deck coaches

Up to around 80 or more seats on two levels. They have the highest capacity per driver and suit busy intercity routes and large groups, but check height limits on your routes.

Intercity coaches

Built for scheduled routes with frequent stops. They have simpler interiors, wider doors and sometimes standing places or a wheelchair lift.

How to choose

  • Typical group size: buy for the trips you do most often, not the biggest one.
  • Route type: city streets and mountain roads favour shorter coaches.
  • Trip length: longer trips need comfort features such as a toilet, reclining seats and climate control.
  • Accessibility: check whether your contracts require a wheelchair lift.
