The used coach buying checklist

What to check on the bodywork, chassis, drivetrain, cabin and paperwork before you buy a used touring coach.

A used coach can give many more years of service. To get those years, check it carefully before you buy. Use this checklist at the viewing, and bring your own mechanic if you can.

1. Paperwork first

  • Registration documents match the chassis number on the coach.
  • Service records: look for regular oil, filter and gearbox services. Check that the mileage in the records rises steadily.
  • Roadworthiness inspections: read the most recent inspection report and any advisories on it.
  • Tachograph: check the calibration date and that the unit works.

2. Bodywork and paint

  • Walk around the coach in daylight. Look for uneven panel gaps, ripples or colour differences that point to past repairs.
  • Open every luggage bay. Check the seals, the hinges and the floors for water marks.
  • Check the windscreen and side glass for chips, cracks and failed seals.

New paint makes a coach look its best. Ask what was repaired before it was painted.

3. Underbody and chassis

  • Look at the chassis rails, the outriggers and the floor for corrosion, especially around the wheel arches and the door steps.
  • Check the air suspension bags for cracks and listen for leaks with the engine off.
  • Check the steering joints and bushes for play.

4. Engine, gearbox and brakes

  • Start the engine from cold if possible. Watch for heavy smoke and listen for knocks.
  • Check for oil, coolant and fuel leaks.
  • On the test drive, check gear changes, the retarder, braking in a straight line and the build-up of air pressure.
  • Read any warning lights or fault codes on the dashboard.

5. Tyres

Check the tread depth, the age stamp (DOT code) and that wear is even. Uneven wear can point to alignment or suspension problems. A coach on new tyres saves you a major cost in year one.

6. Passenger cabin

  • Check the seats, recline mechanisms, seat belts and armrests.
  • Test the air conditioning and heating in all zones.
  • Check the lighting, reading lights, the PA system, screens and USB ports if fitted.
  • If there is a toilet or a kitchen, check that they work and look for leaks.
  • Check the passenger doors open and close smoothly, and test the emergency exits.
